Dr. Gary W. Williams served as the Keynote Speaker at the 6th Annual National Congress on Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics and the 1st Congress on the Environmental Economy of the Northeast (to Congreso Nacional de Economía Agrícola y de los Recursos Naturales y 1er Congreso de Economía Ambiental del Noroeste) in Texcoco, Mexico.  This conference was organized by The Division of Economic and Administrative Sciences (DICEA) of the Autonomous University of Chapingo (Texcoco), the University of South Baja California (UABCS), and the Economics Program of the Postgraduate University (Texcoco)).

His presentation, "El impacto de las importaciones de aguacate Mexicano en la economía de los EE.UU.,"  focused on the economic benefits of avocado imports into the U.S.

AFCERC Co-Directors Co-recipients of the FDRS Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and Communication!

Dr. Oral Capps, Jr. and Dr. Victoria Salin (both Co-Directors of AFCERC), along with Dr. Rafael Bakhtavoryan, Assistant Professor at TAMU Commerce and Aramayis Dallakyan, TAMU Department of Agricultural Economics PhD candidate, were awarded the Food Distribution Research Society's Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and Communication for their piece entitled "The Use of Time-Series Analysis in Examinig Food Safety Issues: The Case of the Peanut Butter Recall."

This award recognizes  outstanding basic or applied research in food distribution and marketing. Selection is made from Journal of Food Distribution Research articles published between annual conferences.

Dr. Gary W. Williams was selected as a host and presenter for the Agricultural and Applied Economics 2018 Annual Meeting - Post-Conference Workshop on "The Convergence of Policy Issues in Produce Research: Labor/mechanization, NAFTA, and the Food Safety Modernization Act."  Dr. Williams', entitled "The Benefits of U.S. Imports of Mexican Avocados" was presented in order to better understand the impact of NAFTA and explore trends in produce trade.

 

 

July 2018

Dr. Gary W. Williams was the featured speaker at the joint Kangwon National University(KNU)/Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Scholarship Program in Global Agricultural Economics at KNU in Chuncheon, South Korea on July 16. The participants included government officials from all over Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia who are funded by their respective governments to get training in international agricultural development. Dr. Williams’ presentation on “U.S. Farm Policy and Developing Countries” was extremely well received.

Dr. Victoria Salin, Co-Director of AFCERC, recently supervised the 3-week study abroad course Agri-Tourism, Market Research, & Exploration: Study Abroad in South Africa and eSwatini (Swaziland). Faculty members and students alike from Texas A&M University and University of Tampa had a wonderful time exploring the land and learning all about agricultural in the region.  How exciting!

 

Dr. Gary W. Williams, Co-Director of AFCERC, presented his selected paper "Generic Promotion of Sorghum for Food and Industrial Use" at the 2018 International Food Marketing Symposium held in Bournemouth, UK.  This symposium is held annually to provide a "forum where academic food marketers can meet to advance the discipline of academic food marketing."

Congratulations to Dr. Adesina!

In August, Dr. Ranajit Bandyopadhyay, Principal Scientist and Leader of the Africa-wide Aflasafe at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, gave his presentation (hosted by AFCERC) on "Safer Crops, Better Health, and Higher Income: Ground-Truths from Development to Scaling-Up of Aflatoxin Biocontrol in Africa."  Very interesting work!

This year at the 2017 International Food and Agribusiness Management Association's (IFAMA) World Conference, Dr. Victoria Salin received the 2017 IFAMA Fellow Award. "The designation of Fellow is awarded to active supporters of the Association for outstanding contribution to food and agribusiness management..." (www.ifama.org/Members).

Avocados: Healthly for You and the U.S. Economy

In Volume 29 - Issue 2, the Journal of International Food and Agribusiness Marketing released the publication "The National Economic Benefits of Food Imports: The Case of U.S. Imports of Hass Avocados From Mexico," written by Dr. Gary W. Williams, Dr. Oral Capps, Jr., and Mr. Daniel Hanselka. This study conducted an economic impact analysis of the benefits of U.S. imports from Mexico and how that affects the U.S. economy.

Report released on the Economic Impact of USDA Export Market Development Programs

This study, conducted by Dr. Gary W. Williams, Texas A&M University; Dr. Jeffrey J. Reimer, Oregon State University; Dr. Rebekka M. Dudensing, Texas A&M Unversity; Dr. Bruce McCarl, Texas A&M University; Dr. Harry Kaiser, Cornell University; and Joseph Somers, Vice President, Informa Economics, IEG, evaluated the impacts of the United States Department of Agriculture's Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program using guidelines contained in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-94.
